Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. Prior to making the move from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. Her first assignment was to model in the company of Montgomery Ward.
