Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. Prior to making the move from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. Her first assignment was to model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She played a role in the romantic comedy film, She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in the ABC drama China Beach with Dana Delany. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series along with the cast.
