The athlete earned international recognition and admiration for presenting the world with one of the most memorable events in the history of sports when she scored the first ever perfect ten on asymmetric bars, at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. Furthermore, she also scored six perfect 10s, making her, at 14 years of old the youngest Olympic medallist in every category. The Romanian gymnast was able to draw international attention and help Romania establish itself as a major player on the international stage. Through achieving a feat which was impossible to achieve and a sporting legend, she brought gymnastics to the forefront of international interest. Women's perception of athletes was also altered by her performances. The impact she had was such that she earned her the title of Olympic toe on and release movements. The moves are classified as difficult. In addition to the Olympics she also performed exceptional at the both World Championships (World Championships) and European Championships.
